One
of Adelaide's best kept secrets. A visit to the home of Sir John Morphett
in its beautiful garden setting at Novar Gardens is a wonderful way
to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Enjoy the History
- Built in 1842 by Sir John Morphett, one of the founding fathers of
Adelaide. Five generations of the Morphett family lived in Cummins House
until 1977, when it was acquired by the South Australian Government.
Enjoy the Gardens - The gardens are lovingly tended by volunteers
and provide a magnificent setting for this historic home. A stroll around
the park like grounds is relaxing and a must for garden lovers.
Enjoy the House - Be impressed by the Morphett's breathtakingly
elegant drawing room with some of the original furniture and furnishings,
the dining room with the family dining suite, the wardrobes and dressing
tables in Lady Elizabeth's bedroom and Sir John's study which houses
many of his parliamentary papers from his long tenure as Speaker of
the House.
Inspect the Out Buildings - The original Dairy with its thick
stone walls for coolness; the laundry with its copper tub for boiling
the clothes and the ironing room with its horizontal mangle and a collection
of over 200 irons on loan from Mrs Beth Klugh.
Enjoy
a Devonshire Tea - As part of the tour, enjoy a delicious Devonshire
Tea in the air conditioned courtyard, originally the area where the
servants lived and worked.
Cummins House is open to visitors between 2pm and 4.30pm on the first
and third Sunday of each month. The entry charge covers a guided tour
and a delicious Devonshire Tea. Coach parties and group bookings are
welcome by special arrangement.
